What is acupuncture?
A traditional therapy, explained clearly
Acupuncture involves placing very fine needles at carefully selected points on the body. The needles are much finer than those used for injections, and nothing is injected through them.
Points may be chosen close to the area you want help with or elsewhere on the body. For example, treatment may include points on the hands, feet, legs, arms, back, abdomen, head or ears.
The number and location of the needles are different for each person. Natasza selects them after speaking with you and considering the purpose of your visit, your general health and how you feel on the day.
Why people consider acupuncture
Support for pain, tension and everyday wellbeing
People explore acupuncture for many different reasons. Some are living with persistent pain, muscular tension or recurring headaches. Others are looking for support with stress-related symptoms, sleep, digestion, women’s health or a general sense that their body is struggling to settle and recover.
Research is stronger for some concerns than others. Acupuncture is not a universal answer, and no response can be promised. Natasza considers each person individually and explains what may be realistic before treatment begins.
How acupuncture works
Two ways of understanding acupuncture
Acupuncture developed over centuries within East Asian medicine. Traditionally, points are selected to influence patterns described through ideas such as Qi, Blood, Yin, Yang and the meridian system.
Modern research explores acupuncture through the nervous system, muscles and the way the body processes pain. Placing a needle stimulates sensory nerves in the skin and underlying tissues. This may influence pain signalling, muscle sensitivity and the release of naturally occurring chemicals involved in pain control.
These explanations come from different medical traditions. The precise effects of acupuncture are still being studied, and the experience varies from person to person.
Your appointment
What happens during acupuncture?
- 01
Information and conversation
Basic information is collected before the appointment so Natasza has an initial understanding of why you are coming.
The appointment begins with a follow-up conversation about your current concerns, relevant health information and what you hope to gain from the session.
Treatment does not begin until the proposed approach has been explained and you feel comfortable proceeding.
- 02
Your individual plan
Natasza selects the acupuncture points and explains which areas of the body will be treated. Points may be close to the area being discussed or elsewhere on the body.
- 03
Needles and time to rest
Every treatment uses sterile, single-use acupuncture needles.
Removing clothing is often unnecessary. If access to an area is needed, Natasza can leave the room while you change. Fresh towels are prepared before each appointment to support privacy and comfort.
Once the needles are in place, you will usually remain comfortably positioned while the treatment continues. You can speak, ask for an adjustment or request that a needle be removed at any time.
- 04
A calm finish
The needles are removed, and there is time to discuss how you feel. When aftercare is relevant, Natasza explains it before you leave and adapts it to your treatment.
What does acupuncture feel like?
Gentle sensations and practical aftercare
Many people feel a brief scratch or small prick as a needle enters the skin. Once it is in place, you may notice warmth, tingling, heaviness or a dull ache around the point. You may also feel very little.
These sensations can differ between points and between appointments. Acupuncture should not feel intensely painful. If anything feels uncomfortable, tell Natasza so the treatment can be adjusted.
Some people feel relaxed, sleepy or slightly light-headed after acupuncture. Minor tenderness or bruising can occasionally occur around a needle point.
There is no fixed course that suits everyone. Any possible next step is discussed individually, and you remain free to decide whether and when to return.
If you feel drowsy after the appointment, wait until you feel fully alert before driving or using machinery.
Training and approach
Training, safety and individual suitability
Natasza studied acupuncture in Poland and completed further training at an acupuncture hospital in London.
Nat Medica also offers auricular acupuncture and cupping. Whether either approach is relevant can be discussed individually.
Pregnant clients, children and people with complex medical histories may be considered for treatment following an individual assessment.
Nat Medica does not provide acupuncture to people taking anticoagulant medicines. If you take medication intended to prevent blood clots, please mention this before booking.
If anything raises concern during the conversation or treatment, Natasza takes a cautious approach. The appointment may be postponed or stopped, and you may be advised to speak with your doctor before continuing.
Common questions
Good to know before your visit
Does acupuncture hurt?
You may feel a brief prick as a needle enters the skin, followed by warmth, tingling, heaviness or a dull ache. Some people feel very little. Tell Natasza if any sensation feels uncomfortable.
Are the needles sterile?
Yes. Nat Medica uses sterile, single-use acupuncture needles. Each needle is disposed of safely after treatment.
Where will the needles be placed?
This depends on the purpose of your appointment. Points may be close to the area being discussed or elsewhere on the body, including the hands, feet, legs, arms, back, abdomen, head or ears.
Will I need to undress?
Often, no. If access to an area beneath your clothing is needed, this will be explained first. You can ask Natasza to leave the room while you change, and fresh towels are prepared for privacy and comfort.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no reliable answer before seeing how you respond. Some people notice a change quickly, while others may need several appointments before deciding whether acupuncture is useful to them. You will not be pressured into booking a course.
Can I have acupuncture during pregnancy?
Pregnant clients may be treated following an individual assessment. Please mention pregnancy before treatment so Natasza can decide whether acupuncture is appropriate and adapt the appointment where necessary.
Can I have acupuncture if I take anticoagulants?
Nat Medica does not provide acupuncture to people taking anticoagulant medicines. If you are unsure whether your medication falls into this category, check with your doctor or pharmacist before booking.
Can I return to normal activities afterwards?
Most people can return to their usual activities. If you feel sleepy or light-headed, rest until you feel fully alert and do not drive or use machinery until it is safe.
